gas plant afloat a specially constructed concrete barge

AWOBA Gas Plant Project Port Harcourt, Nigeria 2002 -2003

On contract from Shell Nigeria Ltd, Daewoo E&C Ltd, Seoul, awarded the transportation of the gas plant barges and ancillary equipment to Lysander Shipping UK Ltd in 2002.

Lysander Shipping was given less than one year to do the overall transportation/feasibility study, producing and agreeing the transportation manual with Daewoo E&C Ltd for this highly complex project.

Barge No 2 being slowly loaded on the semi-submerged vessel M/V Tai an Kou at Zita M/V Tai an Kou fully loaded and on her way to Port Harcourt, Nigeria the two barges finally arrived safely to Cawthorne Channel, River State

The fully assembled barges weighed 7,422 metric tonnes and required a minimum draft of 3 metres. For the barges to reach the deep-sea loading point at Zita, part of the waterways had to be dredged by the US Marine.

The barges were successfully transported to the loading point in August 2003 and then loaded onto the semi-submersible vessel M/V Tai an Kou during three days in September. The vessel sailed for Port Harcourt on the 25th September and arrived safely for discharge at Fort Point on 17th October.

The barges were finally towed and delivered to Daewoo E&C / Shell Nigeria at the site (Cawthorne Channel, River State) on the 30th October. During this project Lysander Shipping's own Cargo Superintendent worked closely with the manufacturer and the Marine Surveyor from Nobel Denton, who was in charge of the risk assessment of the project, to make sure all aspects of the transportation were done in accordance with agreed methods set out in the manual.
