PALAU COMPACT ROAD Island of Babeldaob, Rep. of Palau 1999-2006
The construction contract of the 53 mile long, two lane hard surface road was awarded to Daewoo Engineering & Construction Ltd, Seoul in 1999 under a contract administrated by The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Lysander Shipping was awarded the transportation and logistical movements of Daewoo’s construction equipment and material to the site on the Babeldaob Island. After several visits to the Babeldaob Island, Lysander Shipping produced a feasibility study to Daewoo E &C covering the transportation of equipment and material to site, and the discharge facility.
Over 400 bulldozers, earth excavators, dumper trucks and trailer were shipped by charted vessels with semi heavy lift gear , from old projects sites in Pakistan and Libya to Koror the main project site on the island..
A private discharge/storage facility was constructed for the pipes and sand/gravel shipment close to the project site.
The road which is an engineering marvel in itself, travels through rugged terrain, thick tropical jungle, crossing numerous streams and swamps is proving a testing task for the construction team. The project includes construction of embankments, causeways, bridges, installations of drainage to coupe with the heavy rainfalls, moving of power poles and removal of World War II live ordnance.
The road is scheduled for completion in June 2006.
